You're right - he got screwed. If that's all that was done, I would say that the parts end of the bill was probably much lower than the labor end. A JD overhaul kit is usually in the $1500 to $2000. Figure in a markup on the head and so forth and you probably end up with in the neighborhood of $4000 parts at the outside. $5000 labor is robbery. That would be from 80-100 hours depending on labor rate. I can overhaul one in 40 hours pretty easily. I'm not one for complaining about bills, and it bugs me when guys gripe about honest bills, but I would have complained on that one.
