Back when that tractor was made the keys may have been just mild steel.(dont hold me to this) The home depot stuff is more like white metal, In otherwords junk. H.D. stuff seems meant as a shear type key rather then a keyed shaft type material. The keys on your axle let you slide the wheels in and out correct ? If so they made them like this because splined shafts rould rust together and would not move. Educated guess here, Thats all.
