Not exactly a plumbing fitting Fred, think heat, expansion/contraction and vibration. A lubricant is used to plant the liner and helps prevent damage or twisting of the o-rings and then dissipates into the crankcase and water jacket. Aviation permatex may help seal the o-ring in the groove but would wipe off the land in a couple thermal cycles and wash away. If the liner and land are clean and relatively smooth the o-ring will form and seal any minor imperfections. I think a sealant of any kind is detrimental. Just my 2¢ Joe
