Subject: Re: Perkins Engine Oil Recommendation
Body of Message:

I contacted Perkins England about oil for a 1964 A3-152 and was told to run a low ash low TBN API CC oil, in an engine that wouldn't see a lot of hard use, or I would loose oil control. API CC is obsolete. I re-contacted them and the reply stated that they would comment on this subject no further! I tracted down the OEM remanufacture of Perkins rebuilt engines in the USA. He told me that they had used Delvac 1300, but had, at times the oil control problem, they now use Delvac 1200(low TBN and ash) with good results. I tried to buy some but the product was just discontinued! The new oils have high ash and a high TBN to compensate for the new emission controls on over the highway use engines. The off highway oils are for high sulfer fuel(high TBN). CAT warns that using a high TBN oil causes cylinder polishing with loss of oil control. I contacted most oil companies and was told that the old engines using the now mandated low sulfer fuels are in a no-mans land, and they couldn't offer a truly proper oil.
Thank You,d3 MIKE
Any comments would sure be welcome!
