Out of curiosity

How many acres do you have to farm before your farm is considered "large"? What kind of money does a farmer make on a "large" farm? I know those huge tractors, combines, implements, etc are not cheap...hundreds of thousands of dollars. Do farmers have "contracts" with produce buyers, or do they grow it and look for buyers every year? I know a lot depends on location, type of crop, etc....but I'm looking for general terms. A farm has to turn some kind of profit, obviously, or it couldn't stay in business. Thanks
