In the mid south I would much prefer hemlock. Mostly we use white oak b/c of availablity and durability. Hemlock will last at least as long as white oak, is just as strong, and weighs a lot less. My dad built a barn in 1967, hemlock boxing, cedar posts, oak stringers and crossties, as sasafrass tier rails (tobacco barn) 42'x120'. It was painted in 1978 and 1990 using used engine oil and lamp black. All the boxing is solid, just a little damage, right at the ground where the rain splashes up. I'm going to rebox a couple of barns (built in the 40's, boxed with white oak) with hemlock.
