I enjoyed your story alot. Sorry about the passing of your grandfather. I like many others got the gas and diesel in our veins from our relatives. My grandfather had a Case that he used for cutting and raking hay. When my uncle showed up to bale with his 8N and NH 80 baler (I was able to get ahold of this old baler)my grandfather would follow the baler around with his Case and JD dump rake making sure every stalk of his hay got baled up.
Now days I use all mid-50's Farmalls for my haying, and 60's NH haying equipment. The model 80 NH still works but it tends to be a little unreliable for getting in and out of fields and trying to dodge the weather. My experience now with farming is totally a hobby that I use to relax, have fun and relive my chilhood experiences and if I make a little money selling some hay at the same time it's and added benifit.
The sounds, smells and vibrations of farm equipment is one of the most relaxing things that I know of. Unfortunately to many people don't get to experience this in their busy lives. I think I better go check on my cows and see if they would like another bale of hay

Thanks for listening!
Ernie Bob
