The mix ratio doesn't always give you the protection that the label claims. If you are buying the no-name brands of antifreeze, I have often found that mixing the stated ratio doesn't quite match up to the protection that my antifreeze tester shows when I test the mix. Get a GOOD QUALITY antifreeze tester (hydrometer) and after you mix your solution in a pail then test it. If it shows a bit weak, then add some more antifreeze until you get what you want. I would even do this if using something like Prestone brand, etc. Fifty/fifty should be pretty good, myself I go about 60/40 because we can get some pretty cold weather up here (at least we used to). Some guys up here go 2:1 ratio which might be a bit of overkill. Winters have been relatively mild lately.
