I would listen to the contractor. You don't want settling under the concrete. I even installed 4" plastic drain pipe arouhd the perimeter of my barn to catch heavy draining of surface water, Absolutly put plastic down on your stones to make a continous water (moisture) barrier, I used rewire also. 5" 4000# concrete with expansion material all around the outside & sides of all joints. I have no moisture or cracks.
