If it runs OK and the oil stays reasonably clean I wouldn't mess with it too much. It sounds like whatever damage could be done has already occurred. It's possible that the more you try to clean out such a dirty engine, the more likely it is for it to start using oil since ironically, the sludge may have been acting as sort of an oil seal. I've heard many guys complain of this situation. Also, clogging oil passages could be a risk if the sludge breaks ups over a short period of time.
