The Hot bulb, sometimes called a hot tube engine, used an alloy tube, sometimes made of platinum extending into the combustion chamber instead of a spark plug, usually heated by a small gas flame, when compression reached the critical point the heat from the tube would ignite it just as a spark plug does. It just saved constructing a magneto/ignition system, and with low speed, low compression engines it worked. Just an early form of ignition. Lots of early flywheel engines used hot-tube. John
