Many of the Wallis serial numbers are located on
top of the transmission box to the rear of the
shift lever. The engine number isn't too good for
ID purposes.
Wallis was known for being the first to use the
frameless design. The design was a bath tub look
that joined the engine and trans/rear together to
work as the frame. Most every tractor moved to
this style and it's still used today. Wallis and
the J.I. Case Plow Works merged in 1919 and kept
the Wallis name for the tractor line. In around
1928 Massey Harris bought J.I. Case Plow Works
and rights to Wallis. MH sold the Case name to
J.I. Case Threshing Machine Co. MH used the Wallis
name and designs for a few years before switching
to the Massey Harris name. MH got an American
dealer network and a good tractor line with the
Wallis. They also got the bath tub U-frame design
that changed the way tractors were built.
