Yes, they have a nice display of anitques at Woodstock, I go every year to see it and the antique tractor pull. The pull is more interesting than the other antique pulls around here. For one thing it is longer. A full pull is the length of the pit, about75 or 80 ft. And they use a long enough chain that the weight of the boat doesn't load the back of the tractor much, adding too much traction. This means that it isn't a power contest, tractors with less power can still compete. It is more of a contest of technique, and finding the best course down the pit. They don't fill in the ruts, the drag does that too. The other pulls around here use such a short chain and it loads the back of the tractor so much, increasing traction, that only a powerful tractor can generally be a winner. And it leads to a lot of non stock "stock" engines.

Anyway I recomend the Woodstock CT fair show and pull. The pull usually happens on a Friday night, starting at 5 or 6pm. The fair grounds are not far off interstate rt. 395, several miles northwest of Putnam where Rt 171 and 169 meet in South Woodstock.

Another good event that happens around here is the Antique Tractor Show at the Brooklyn fair grounds, 10 or 15 mi. south of here on rt 169 in Brooklyn. They have an anitque tractor pull here too, and a bit of a sway meet has developed over the years. This year it is going to be Oct 5, although it is usually Columbus day weekend. The weather can be a real b*%#& that weekend it seems, but unless it is really cold and rainy it is worth it. I think around 1 or 2pm they stop the pull and any antique tractor can parade thought the ring with all the others and the announcer will tell a little about each one. You actually bet to see most of them running this way, not just sitting on display.

Today's Featured Article - Tractor Hydraulics - The Basics - by Curtis Von Fange. Hydraulics was one of the greatest inventions for helping man compound the work he can do. It’s amazing how a little floor jack can lift tons and tons of weight with just the flick of a handle. What’s even more amazing is that all the principals of hydraulic theory can be wrapped up in such a small package. This same package applies to any hydraulic system from the largest bulldozer to the oldest and smallest tractor. This short series will take a look at the basic layout of a simple hydraul ...
