Stirred up something with this one, lots of good comments. From what I gather --

We've probably all lived on farms, respect and even love our animals and don't mistreat them. We probably all eat meat as well.

Thing is, that's not good enough for these people. They're probably not going to be happy until we're all forced to become vegetarians by law, or by making meat incredibly expensive.

They'll do it through the courts, using environmental regulations to shut down feed lots. They'll file class action suits against food producers and retailers --like the McDonalds flap -- so eating meat of any kind will get very expensive. You see they're complaining about wages in packing plants. Expect lawsuits from that direction -- making meat more expensive.

They'll also take your meat away through legislation. Read their article about FDA - tighter regulations means less production means higher prices. Higher minimum wages for packing plants = more expensive meat. Now that the government claims responsibility for your health care -- they're going to start to legislate what you put in that body of yours -- which is now their responsibility after all. I predict excise taxes on certain meats within 5 years.

The wackos here want to raise taxes to pay for more "affordable" housing. Yet they don't want you to cut down trees to build more houses -- just preserve it all in national forests so it can all burn down in a wildfire. Then there are the wackos here in state who see a new building going up -- bemoan the fact it's made of trees -- so they sneak in at night and burn down all that good lumber. Makes no sense on the face of it.

The world wide wackos are meeting now in South Africa to complain that we're not sending them enough money, and food, and medicine, yet those clowns in Zimbabwe are murdering the farmers to take their land then they end up with no food. Again, makes no sense.

None of this stuff makes sense because it's not about what's right or wrong; good or bad. It's about power, pure and simple. They just want to tell you what to do, when to do it, all day long, every day. So what if free markets have built the best living conditions in the history of man. These people don't have power in free markets - that's where everybody gets a choice. Nope, that's no good. They just know more than you or me. So they just have to tell you what to do.

Sure there are problems with factory farms. But these people want to do a whole lot more than give you information so you can vote with your dollars -- and buy your meat from good outfits. That's not enough, they want to control your choice because they don't trust the choice you might make on your own.

End of rant. When I see this kind of stuff -- and the increased control, and taxation and regulation that's generally implicit in these kinds of "causes" it makes me wonder what my ancestors who left Europe to have freedoms and opportunities would think of where we are and where we're going now.
