Nope, i'm NOT a dealer, nor do i have any stock in the company, but i am a long time user of Howard rotavators, and they have made me a bit of $$ through custom rotavateing. That's kinda refreshing durning these times of depressed farm prices!!

I all so like to set the record straight when people lump all tillers together, because they really have no idea that a rotavator doesn't just grind the soil into powder. You DO have to learn how to ajust it, and use it properly.

With tall green matter you can get some plugging, so in that case i prefer to brush hog the field first. I'm talking about "thick" woody weeds ect. over 18" tall. Grass will NOT plug it, and it does NOT plug easily. All the dry crops for the most part get chewed up, includeing the rye field you mentioned.

I rotavated a rye field the other day that the rye was all over 5' tall, and some of it at least 7' tall when combined. The straw was left in the field, and it was NOT brush hogged before i rotavated it. There was some wrapping of the straw, but i never had to stop and cut it out. The field does need a second pass to incorporate that amount of trash.

The reason the straw wasn't baled was because lots of veggie farmers here are now going all "organic", and they are building up their fields by leaving the straw in the field. I even get customers that get old small square bales of hay for free, and drive out in their fields and throw them all over. I rotavate right over them!!

The worse case of plugging i EVER have had, was last fall when i took out a patch of willows!! It took them out, but they were wound every place, and i did end up haveing to unwind them and pull them out when i was done!!

Just make sure you stay away from fences though!!! :)
Robert

Today's Featured Article - Choosin, Mounting and Using a Bush Hog Type Mower - by Francis Robinson. Looking around at my new neighbors, most of whom are city raised and have recently acquired their first mini-farms of five to fifteen acres and also from reading questions ask at various discussion sites on the web it is frighteningly apparent that a great many guys (and a few gals) are learning by trial and error and mostly error how to use a very dangerous piece of farm equipment. It is also very apparent that these folks are getting a lot of very poor and often very dangerous advice fro ... [Read Article]
