serial number on A-C C

OK Tractor Folks... I know nada about A-C's, but I looked at a C today that a guy has for sale and he and I can't find the serial number. He bought it last year and there was another C where he got this one and the serial number on the other was on the transmission case to the left of the gear shift. (This is where it's supposed to be, right?) This tractor has 'tractor n9' where the serial number is supposed to be. He hasn't seen the number anywhere else. It may say n5 rather than n9. Anybody know what this means? Cranks and runs fine. Both hand brakes hold. Thanks for any insight. Terry L.
