I am overwhelmed and very grateful for all of your responses to my question. You are all telling me what I guess I already knew somewhere in the back of my mind -- that I just have to tell people NO and explain to them why.

I've been a real wuss on this, but loaning out stuff is like some kind of DRUG -- if you do it once, it's awful hard after that to "just say no." You end up in the position of thinking, "Gee, I let Fred borrow my hayrake last week, how can I tell Clem this week he can't borrow my baler?" Vicious cycle. Plus, I strongly suspect my neighbors have told each other, "Heck, don't BUY equipment -- old Cim'll let you borrow HIS."

Before my brother retired and turned the farm (and this problem) over to me, he tried to get around it by saying, "No, you can't borrow my tractor and ditcher, but I'll come over and clean your ditch for you." He was trying to shame them into saying, "Oh no, I couldn't impose on you like that." Never happened! And not once to my knowledge did anyone ever even offer to pay him for his time, or reimburse him for his fuel, wear 'n' tear, etc. All he got was flat tires from debris they hadn't picked up, barbed wire wrapped up in his combine cylinder, stuck all day in mudholes they "forgot" to tell him about, etc.

Well, you guys all know (just lettin' off steam, here ... LOL!) Anyway, guess old Ben Franklin had it right when he said, "Neither a borrower nor a lender be." And thanks to all your advice, and knowing I have YOUR "moral support" behind me, that's exactly gonna be my policy, starting TODAY!

Again, thanks to you all for taking the time to help me with my problem and for "loaning" me your good ideas and common sense on this!!! Best regards, Cim.
