Cam gear problem with 1963 MF 35 (Gas)

Does anyone have any advice or experience dealing with replacing the cam gear on a MF35 gas model? I had a distributor go bad internally and I was told by a parts dealer to check the cam gear. The gear appears worn or damaged looking through the distribitor hole. I am assuming my next move is to replace and would like to know how big of a job this will be.
