Sounds like a low voltage condition at the solenoid coil. What happens is this: You push the starter button. 6 volts flows to the solenoid coil. The solenoid energizes and closes the power circuit to the starter. The heavy current drawn by the starter results in a drop in system voltage to below the "hold in" voltage of the solenoid. The solenoid drops out and current stops flowing to the starter. With starter current interrupted, system voltage returns to 6 volts and the solenoid coil pulls back in re-energizing the starter. This cycle repeats many times a second resulting in solenoid buzzing and a slow cranking speed. To correct the problem you need to minimize voltage drop to the solenoid coil. Stuff you can do: Make sure all battery cable connections are clean and tight. Check that the solenoid mounting bracket is solidly grounded. Install heavier battery cables. Run heavier wire from the ammeter thru the starter button and to the solenoid coil terminal. Replace the solenoid with one with a lower "hold in" voltage. Replace the battery with a higher ampere-hour capacity battery. As JoeK suggests the Ford replacement solenoid may also be too small to handle the current. (Takes a lot more current to crank a Brockway's big 6 cylinder Continental than an little 4 cylinder Ford tractor motor!)
