Road signs started changing to dual measurements as part of the big federal conversion program. The idea was that after they'd all been dual measurement signs for a while that they'd then be switched to kilometers-only signs. It didn't work. The people complained so much about how confusing the signs (and other features of the program) were that the feds backed down and the requirement went away. There's one sign near me that I can remember having been a dual measurement sign for quite a while. When it was replaced, the new sign was a miles-only sign.
