They have switched to metric in some ways, like you refer. When I served in the mid-60s the Army was working with NATO forces to develop a new tank, and they used components from two countries. I believe the bulk (pun intended) of the machine was US, and the engine/drive train was metric. Mechanics nightmare with the requirement of double tool sets plus switching back and forth depending which component was being worked on. Some weaponry was standardized to correspond to NATO rounds- 7.62, 5.56 mm etc. even back then. Also being used were measurments in meters and km., especially for those on foot. Muffler bearings and plank stretchers were still available in US standard measure.
