Have been down the Cub lo-boy route('74 154 series) For my own personal experience it was the poorest excuse for a lawn mower I ever poured money into! It has a 1800 rpm reverse rotating power shaft, which is too high and too far to the side for any thing towed to be pto driven. The wheel clutch, and the clutch disk brake had to be adjusted every week till I discovered that the drive shaft from the engine to the transmission mounted clutch was not aligned with the clutch disk which is mounted on the trans. input shaft, and causing the pressure plate and the clutch disk to self destruct, the dealer felt sorry for me and charged me only $35.00 for a manual for it. The fix for it was to cut the drive shaft into about 6" ahead of the splines on the shaft, shorten it, and put a 15/16" universal in the shaft, and then put 2 Type "E" Dodge brand self aligning pillow blocks in the driveshaft and shim the bearings till they lined up. Found out later that fellow across the road bought a 184, which had a universal joint in it (factory?). The 3 speed trans was too slow in 1st and 2nd was too fast for a lot of mowing conditions 3rd was strictly for a transport speed only. The next big gripe was the starter-generator o.k. for small single cylinder engines, but prone to belt slippage on this setup had to be bow string tight. Only puts out 14 amps of charge, so it won't take much in the way of electrical accessories, lighting, etc. Wait till you have to have one of them repaired around here!! The generator/starter guys see SUCKER written all across you when you walk in the door and lay it on you! The differential has no positraction, or lock feature and be sure to note if it has one combined brake pedal set up or the individual brakes Thiele Kaolin had only one brake pedal on their's that they mowed with. Fortunately in respect to mine it did have two brake pedals on it. The tie rod ennds are a 1/2" ball joint like on a throttle linlage and if your steering gets in a bind the small tie rods will bend easily, when you have to really snatch on it there is no power steering available for this jewel, the one I purchased had a front end loader on it and when you got anything in the bucket, you could not steer it!The loader was an IH 1050 series, made for the Loboy though and fit nicely. Another long tale! This tractor will tip sideways and loses traction very easily if on a bank or ditch mowing. The live hydrualic lift did work good, handled a 5'Mott CLB 60 flail mower ok, this unit was designed specially for the cub, reverse rotation and 1850 rpm was factored into the design. To make a long oration short I found someone who thought he needed it bad and sold it to him, hated to let the flail mower go, but wort it to get rid of the Cub!! When I got finally rid of it I bought a 650 JD (built by Yanmar) compact diesel has 8 fwd, 2rev, and, diff lock live hyd , but not live pto, found another Mott flail mower, adapted the IH loader to my JD,put power steering on it an was much happier from then on and use less than half as much fuel to mow with also.
