According to my charts-1 ton of lignite coal=
12,ooo,ooo BTU's
3,516 kwh
71 gal.-Imp.of #2fuel or
88 gal.-Am.
and 1 hp.=.746kw
According to test results from the National Threshers Assn. Reunion at Montpelier, Ohio done June 22-24/ 1961 - their 24-75 Port Huron averaged 3lbs. of coal/hp.hr. during an economy run producing about 50 hp. So 3/2000 x 12,000,000= 18,000 BTU's /hp. Others averaged around 4lbs.of coal/hp.hr = 4/2000 x 12,000,000 =24,000 BTU's/hp.hr
According to the Nebraska Tests the very best diesel tractor does 18 hp.hr/gal and gas is about 13hp.hr/gal. At 18-- 12,000,000/88.75=13521/18= 7511 BTU's /gal.
Now If there is 3516 kwh in 88.75 gal of diesel and 1hp is .746 kw then in theory there is 53 hp/hr. in a gal of #2 diesel.
So 18/53 = 34% thermal efficiency for the diesel and for the majority of them at 16/53= 30% eff.
Now for Old Smokey- 12,000,000/53/18,000=12.5% thermal efficiency and at 4lbs of coal/hp.hr = 24000 BTU/hp.hr.= 12,000,000/53/24000= 9.4% eff.
S0 in a hundred years we have gained 20% thermal efficiency.
