Facts not confused, lead does provides a protective lead oxide coating on the exhaust seat that acts as a lubricant,but when high levels of lead was added these deposits caused trouble. Gasoline with a level of 0.1 to 0.2 grams of lead per gallon is ideal for most older motors,as the years went by more and more lead was added, until 1973 when the EPA cut it back to 2.5 grams-per gallon, which was still 25 times the needed amount. I remember in the 1960's ford recomended the use of low lead gasoline for some of there cars, but i dont know the specific reason why. Does anyone remember what `white gas` was used for? someone told me it was low-lead or no-lead and used for inboard marine engines.
