Mike,
A couple things enter into the custom rate. First what size tractor do you have, a small compact with a 4' cutter will not do the same amount of work as a 50hp with a heavy 6' cutter. Secondly your level of experience will determine how productive you will be and what jobs that you take and leave alone. I do brush hogging, and dirt moving work when I have extra time. Brush hogging may range from pasture clipping to moderate briars and small brush to rough terrain and saplings the size of your arm. I have two different size tractors and two sizes of cutters and use and price according to the job. I also have one tractor with a loader and a 6' box blade and a heavier tractor with a heavy-duty 7' box blade the same applies here. For larger cutting jobs the rate is $35 per hour for lighter work and goes up to $60 per hour for the rougher higher risk work. For small jobs (most require 5 to 15 miles of hauling each way) I charge $50 for the first hour and $35 per hour after that (clock starts when the tractor comes off the trailer). For the higher rates I am usually working on slopes that are not for the inexperienced or faint-hearted. As you start out be careful not to let your promises overstep your abilities or equipment capabilities. Be fair and modest with your pricing and strive to do the best job that can be done and most people will happily pay the value of the job. Many folks will add a gratuity for the extra effort to please them. Some folks will not be happy regardless and you refrain from dealing with them again. People tend to pass on the name of the people who do the Best and the Worst jobs. Best of Luck
