A quality synthetic ( there are some low grade synthetics as well) does three things. #1Keeps metal surfaces apart at pressures where mineral oil is squeezed out.#2 Flows & lubricates at below freezing temps where mineral oil slow getting to the oil pump & through the filter etc.#3 With air cooled & turbo engines running at high temps mineral oil will break down into flamible vapours & coke(carbon/ash). Synthetic oil will keep on flowing, lubricating & carrying dirt/heat away. If your application(s) fits these, them use Amsoil or Mobil 1. As for cost the difference between mineral & synthetic is negligable. Figure the entire cost of the machine, fuel, insurance, general service & you won't even see the extra cost of synthetic. A quality oil filter is a must. There are cheap filters & counterfiet filters with quality brand names on them. I purchase the Amsoil to ensure no "monkey business". Too frequent oil changes when the oil is still "clean" just adds to oil disposal problems & extra cash in the refiners pocket.
