The Shell Oil co site has quite a bit of info about the advantages and disadvantages of whether or not to use synthetic oil. They sell both so I would assume they are not biased too much.
Their website lists one of the downfalls of synthetic oil as it has less ability to hold dirt in suspension compared to the amount traditional mineral oils do. This means that the blow-by, dirt, gunk , etc. in your engine is no longer being held by the oil and drops to the bottom of the pan and creates sludge. I have had people tell me this makes no difference because the oil filter is supposed to catch this anyway. If that was the case and the oils ability to hold dirt in suspension wasn't important, oil would nver get dirty in use.
For my .02 worth.... nuff said. Those older engines were never designed needing any of the advantages synthetics can provide and modern mineral oils like the new API SL grades are light years ahead of anything they will ever need.
