Are you getting a good ground when it's mounted on the side of the tractor engine? Maybe just check that out. Meanwhile, where are you getting the generator checked? There are a ton of auto electric places these days that I'd have some reservations as to whether they could really do a good check on a 6V generator. I had an alternator checked in two reputable places years ago on a little Honda I was driving. Both places said the alternator was kaput ... one said it was putting out volts but no amps, the other place said it was OK for amps but no volts. My neighbour located the problem, one of the fuses in the charging system had burnt out.
