Lead was added to prevent pre-detonation (raise the octane). However, it also left deposits of lead oxide that was soft enough to provide a pad for the metal to metal contacting going on with the valves and seats. Thus, if you use harder material for valves and seats (like new engines), no need for lead. On older machines that expected lead, the metal to metal contact can eventually do damage. On the suggestion above that kerosene would help, or Marvel Mystery Oil, I think the answer is that they will indeed help the lubrication issue, and help dissolve whatever is making a valve sticky, but won't leave the desirable deposit that either lead or lead substitute will that protects the metal. Lead substitute is really cheap. Why not just use it?
