i would not recommend thompson's because it is a parafin (wax) based product. it, like the wax you put on your car, wears off quickly, and does not penetrate the wood for good treatment. nor would i recommend using used motor oil as the oil breaks down the wood fibers, causing weakening. the best product would be boiled lindseed oil or a good, oil based (not the same as motor oil) wood preservative from a paint store, like diamond vogel, etc (use caution when buying paint products from large department-type stores, such as menard's, as the quality of the product and the product knowledge of the "salesperson" can be questionable. got the info about the thompson's and used oil treatments from a tree farm biologist, however, do what you think is best.
