If you really were ready to spend the big bucks on the 4000, just keep looking around for a modern tractor similar, just at a more reasonable price.A neighbor around here picked up a late model Kubota 4 wheel drive with loader and backhoe for $10,000.
That 800 series Ford could be a nice tractor for you if you copuld get Power steering installed, and had a good shop you could get to make it perfect for you. Without Power steering my 600 was impossible to steer with a bucket full of sawdust mulch. (I have a pretty large bucket). The other drawback to a hundred series is the lack of diff lock, which can get you out of trouble quickly.
4000's and 3000's are more what you need by the sound of it. I'm a Ford guy, so I can't give you recommendations on other brands, but I'm sure a good little Oliver or Massey or even the right Allis could work well too.I drive a 454 INternational when I need to do my driveway resurfacing jobs. or bushog for hire. Even something green could work, I know I've drooled on a few of those too. Just couldn't afford them. (A certain 750 4wd with loader/hoe had me in love a while ago..)
I guess what you need is a trusted friend to check out your prospective purchases, and help when they eventually need work.
