More often than not the symptoms you describe are due to a bad connection. Wire brush both the battery end of both cables and also the other end of each cable. Corrosion will form on the battery end as a fine white crust. It is not always obvious from looking but it will prevent starting. You can check the battery under load yourself. Put a meter across the battery post(not the cable, the battery post) and see what it reads. If it reads 12 volts then have someone else try to crank the engine while you watch the meter. If the engine barely turns over and the battery voltage drops a lot, you probably have a bad battery. If the engine barely turns and the voltage doesn't drop, you probably have a bad connection.
