Thanks for the help, all! I've got an Oliver Super 55 with what I believe is a factory option external valve for the Oliver frontloader. The manual is one of the Jensale reprints they sell on this site, but the drawings sure don't match what I've got in real life. I think the valve / loader setup changed things enough that I'm skittish about fililng the resevoir all the way with everything raised, though it's what the manual says I should do. (I'm splitting the difference right now: too low when raised & too high when down.)
