The Quadrajet is a good carb. Back when we used them we had some trouble with the throttle shafts wearing the castings, causing air leaks and poor idle quality. Many moons ago, I "kitted" the Quadrajet on my old GTO with good results. You could try this yourself, it isn't as bad as you think. If you check in the hot rod magazines, there are companies that sell new or expertly rebuilt Qjets. I always liked them because the small primaries gave good mileage and low speed response, yet the large secondaries let the big engines run well at higher RPM's.

I would not recommend the Holley. I have never heard anyone brag about the mileage with a Holley and they have a real problem with power valve failure if the engine backfires. And worst of all, if the float bowl gasket starts to leak, the Holley dumps lots of gas on top of the intake because the sealing surfaces are vertical. A friend of mine lost his 454 Chevy farm truck because the little fire extinguisher he had in it was not enough to put out the fire his Holley caused. Burned the whole cab and all he could do was wait for the fire department. If you get a Holley, carry a big fire extinguisher!
