I prefer to look a little deeper than the paint job. I used to be forever surprised at the inventions of yester-year, or rather the re-inventions of latter years. For example you just need to look at the increased power JD extracted from the two cylinder design over so many years, or the smooth 'sixes' introduced in the thirties, or the four wheel drives of an era so forgotten that they were supposedly invented several decades later!
The vintage and veteran tractor maybe couldn't compare with the sophistication of modern machines in any colour but they were designed for the market of the day and some (though not all) served their purpose well. Even in those days ther were the cheap and cheerful designs (Fordsons?) which were soon outmoded but, by mass production, offered a welcome entry to agricultural mechanisation for many farmers over more than a generation. There were some maybe better concepts at prohibitive cost but they all collectively led to the present day designs. Harry Ferguson and his three point hitch is one invention that has not been replaced, just improved upon.
No, history is history and there are no more of these old ones being made, so I say anything, any colour, which is old and rare should be cherished and even still used if appropriate.
Lets face it, its not really the colour, its the design concepts that are coveted. There would still be the same good humoured fun, and others (who are perhaps more fanatical of their preference than some) making pointed comments even if the only colour ever available had been battleship grey!
Long live the restoration of all old machinery (not just tractors). Variety is the spice of life!! Just my 2p worth. RAB
