I have read about this problem on rigs that tow heavy loads in hot weather. This is on light duty machines without an engine oil cooler. It seems that if oil (especially multiweight) gets hot enough it will break down into a thick sludge.
I had personal experience with this when a guy bought straw from me to bale. He was pulling the large round baler with a small turbocharged AC tractor. While he was working somthing happened to cause the turbo to seize. He foolishly decided to keep working the tractor even though it was putting out huge clouds of black diesel smoke. The next morning he started the tractor and had no oil pressure. He removed the oil drain plug and attempted to drain the oil. The jelled oil would not run out of the drain hole,and sticking a screw driver in there felt like stiring cool roofing tar. He had to remove the oil pan to get the jelled goo out of the engine. With a new turbo and new oil/filters, the tractor ran fine.Bearings looked good.
