Farmall used a lettering system to indicate the year model of the tractor. the letter L started with the 1939 yr model. M was 1940. N was 1941 and so on on the lettered tractors. sometimes, but not all the time this id number is on the rt side of the engine block just above the oil pan and toward the front of the tractor. if there is no number there, you might check all the casting numbers that are visable. if all of them start with L. you've probably got a 39, etc. if it is a super m the brakes will be different than a regular m. good luck.
