Just a note...don't forget the six volt starter...(you can ignore this if it's a hand crank only start) if you run it on 12 volts she'll spin over like a top..but the windings don't like double the voltage and it will eventually take it's toll...(this holds true for the external solenoid if you're running one)there are a couple ways around this problem...one is to go to a 12 volt starter...this could be expensive. Another is to run two 6 volt batteries in series...the charging and lighting and ignition circuit goes across the pair of batteries (this is assuming the lighting and ignition circuits have been converted to 12 volts) and the 6 volt starter circuit is fed by ground and the junction of the two batteries...while it is true that the starter battery does more work than the second battery we haven't seen any big problem with this system as far as battery life goes and if it bothers you you can always swap the batteries once in a while to get even "wear" on the batteries. The key to the whole thing is to make sure that the ignition circuit is running on 12 volts (which requires a 12 volt coil and often a resistor on the coil primary just to keep the points from burning). All of this is said with the assumption that the reason a lot of folks go to 12 volts is for better starting....we have found that a good working 6 volt starter is plenty for turning the motor over...the 12 volt ignition is just what is needed to fire the fuel...it's also a great option when you can't find a 12 volt starter that fits the motor...but want the starting benefit of a 12 volt ignition system.

Today's Featured Article - Identifying Tractor Smells - by Curtis Von Fange. We are continuing our series on learning to talk the language of our tractor. Since we can’t actually talk to our tractors, though some of the older sect of farmers might disagree, we use our five physical senses to observe and construe what our iron age friends are trying to tell us. We have already talked about some of the colors the unit might leave as clues to its well-being. Now we are going to use our noses to diagnose particular smells. ELECTRICAL SMELLS ... [Read Article]
