Most tractor hydraulics are set for 5 to 10 gpm flow at up to 2000 psi or so. Many won't do 10. The formula for HP if I remember it right put that hydraulic power at about 6 to 12 hp. Tractor hydraulics are mostly used for cylinders or small motors. A brushhog type mower can easily consume 30+ HP. that would take 26 gpm at 2000 psi and probably 3/4 or 1" hoses and connectors. Its more tempting to put a PTO pump (on a tractor with PTO) and a hydraulic motor on implements where I've just broken a U-Joint turning a corner too sharp. Part of the reason a tractor's hydraulic flow is limited to about 5 gpm is that the typical 3" diameter 8" stroke cylinder would get to the end too fast if the flow was greater and likely punch out the end of the cylinder occasionally. Controlling the cylinder to not be too jerky takes a lot of finesse on the control. With a 5 gpm limit, anybody can look smooth. Then some tractors just don't have that big a pump. Gerald
