I have an 8N (1949) with a front mount distributor.

I would suggest a couple of things before getting into the timing gears.

First, check to see if your carb float is sticking. It sounds like your getting a restriction in your gas flow. From your discription, it sounds like the carb is filling with enough gas after setting for a while, just enough to start the tractor, then after running for a minute or so it is running out of gas. ie restricted gas flow.

Suspect, gas bowl screen cloged, gas shut off valve stuck nearly closed, float and needle valve sticking, crimped gas line or improper settings on the fuel/air ratio screw.

Also, the reason I mentioned I had a front mount distributor, is that about 2 years ago, I could not keep my 8N tuned for nothing. I would replace points, rotor, cap over and over, just to have it run poorly. After close inspection of the distributor shaft, I noticed (and replaced) the brass bushing in the housing that the shaft runs through. The bushing was wore out allowing the shaft to wabble just a little. This was not alowing the points to keep a constant gap and it allowed the rotor to come in contact with the points on the cap.

Check these items and the other suggestions already posted from the other guys. Don't give up.
