I have a Perkins 4.108 engine that I had in a car for 100,000 miles. It has a Thermostart unit on it. The procedure is to apply 12 volts to the electical connector for about 15 seconds and start cranking. I never had cold weather starting problem (including below zero farenheit). I drove it to work every day. I had a spring loaded toggle switch mounted under the dash. You can continue holding the switch on for a few seconds after it starts until is runs smooth. It has a heating coil in the unit that heats up and expands a valve control which allows fuel to enter, the hot coil ignites the fuel and the flame is drawn into the intake manifold and warms the air going into the engine. It's slicker than gorilla snot!
