Possibly a better reason for painting the inside of an engine is to seal the porosity of the casting. I would never have believed it until I ran into a machine installation job several years ago, but extruded cast aluminum plate that I was working with had soaked up hot hydraulic oil and was dripping it on steel doors that were being manufactured. Solving this problem led me to several documented incidents where oil literally leaked through castings. In fact a friend who worked at the Bliss punch press plant told me that they coated the inside of their castings with some sort of coating to seal the castings. I would go with the glyptol or orange or white lead for this reason.
