MM U302 - Hard/No Start

Posted by RWK in WI on January 17, 1999 at 15:51:08:

In the last year I have gotten a MM U302. There is no information on its past. Looks fairly good.
Started easily all summer. In fall I drained and replaced the oil and filter. Put in 10W-30. Tested the battery and it showed good.
Now that cold weather has arrived I wanted to use it for snow plowing as it has a 10' Hydro-turn blade. It doesn't want to start. Slow turn over and no fire. Jumping to the battery helps some but still slow turn over. Sometimes gets it started. Junping to the starter helps spin it faster but then has trouble fireing.
In the summer it started at idle with no choke, now ? ? ? Nothing seems to help. Battery still tests good and the lights don't dim when I use the starter. The battery is next to the drivers seat in the cab.
Can't use an engine heater as the parking location has no electricity.
My 12v Ford 640 at the same location starts easily and I have been using it to jump the MM but plowing with its 6' blade takes a lot longer.
Any ideas on where I should start on the MM?

Thanks in advance.

Today's Featured Article - The Nuts and Bolts of Fasteners - Part 2 - by Curtis Von Fange. In our previous article we discussed capscrews, bolts, and nuts along with their relative hardness and thread sizes. In this segment we will finish up on our fasteners and then work with ways to keep them from loosening up in the field. Capscrews, bolts and nuts are not the only means of holding two parts together. When dealing with thinner metals like sheet tin, a long bolt and ... [Read Article]
