Oops! I just assumed you were talking about a diesel!!! choke operation is a good thing to check. Be sure battery, cables & starter are in top condition. High amp draw @ starter = poor spark & hard starting. This problem shows up more in cold weather with lower battery efficiency. Coolant heater will help, but this critter should start well on its own down well below zero if it is right. The comment about these motors being "cold blooded" due to the crossflow head is right on track.
