The tire issue is nothing new. In the early to mid 70's I transported a lot of farm/construction equipment all across this country. In the big wheat fields in the north west, the rubber tired tractors had to compete with crawlers. The argument was that the tire cost was much higher than the cost of the under carriage of a track tractor. Under carriage life was phenomenal, as they stayed on top of the soil, and the grain stubble lubricated the tracks in a fashion, where as tires were always slipping. As for weight, if you look at the specs on like the 500hp range the new JD's for example, are in some cases heavier from the get go. More efficient engines, better hydraulics and the biggest selling feature is comfort and convenience.
