well more then likely ya have a broke detent spring and maybe a couple missing rollers Under the range cover under your feet . This job is not to hard to do . Remove the center section of the floor plate unhook the shift linkage and block up the park loc by placing a 1/2 nut under it keeping it UP . Now may self i like to remo9ve the side plateto the rear of the left step on the side of the rear housing the one with the clipped corner . Now if the trans fluid is AT the full mark then you will loose one gallon when removed , If it is above that mark depending on how MUCh above it could be two gallon to five or six gallon. The reason i do this is when you lift the range cover Reverse shifter shaft may hang in the reverse shift fork as it comes up and also once it clears the shifter fork it will kick out and give y9ou fits tryen to go back together , This also allow inspection of the shifter fork as every once in a while ya may find it to be broken . Under the cover is where the said spring goes on and arm that has a roller on it that drops into the detents on the shifter cam . I would go buy and I T Manual now since you now have the new Tonka toy as it will be a huge help down the road for other issues that will come up. Oh and while you have he cover off NOW is the time to up date the park lock to the 86 series spring loaded park lock . Every 06 up thru 66 that has come thru my shop does not leave with out the up grade.
