Stan - I am a balloon pilot and a farmer both. 99%+ pilots do not cut fences. Anyone pilot or their crew that does is an EXTREME criminal @hole and should be prosecuted for that crap. It gives us a very bad name and we absolutely don't want that. I have crew ask permission first from the landowners everywhere I can when I land even if it's open and easily accessible unless I already know them and have blanket permission. As a farmer with cattle on my farm I also fly higher over them or other livestock (i.e. horses). I go out of my way to have good relations with my neighbors and the local community in general. I give away most of my rides and don't sell any as I'm a private pilot and can't without a commercial license and a Class 2 medical.
Eric - the pilot there of the Touchstone balloon is a close ballooning friend of mine. He's originally from Iowa (still has farm land up there) but is based in St. Louis. He's also one of the local aircraft (balloon) mechanic/repair station plus an FAA designated examiner.
