I had been experiencing a fuel starvation issue with my 1965 IH 434 (gas) tractor.
It was increasingly experiencing what appeared to be a fuel starvation issue - tractor starts fine, then chugs along after running 5 minutes or so then dies. I had this problem years ago and changing the points solved it. So I filed/reset the points, installed new plugs, coil, condensor - didn't resolve the problem. Last week I did notice that once it stalled, the only way to get it regoing was to manually pump the lift pump 20 times, it would then start fine, run for 1-2 minutes no problem, but then stall again. You would have to manually pump it again to get it running. This would seemingly point to the lift pump. I got a lifter rebuild kit from my Case dealer, but, a rebuilding it didn't resolve the problem. I disassembled the carb today and clean out every jet, nook, and cranny. With the carb off I decided to check the volume of fuel through the fuel line. Voila! The first set of pumps were decent but then it petered out quickly. I removed the line from the tank to the lifter, blew it with compressed air and that seemed ok. I opened up the valve from the fuel tank and was only getting a few drops out even though the tank was half full! I siphoned the tank down and removed the valve - it was plugged with debris! I recommend putting a strainer on the mouth of the tank.
