I run an old Hesston baler model 5540. It is not a silage baler and it never will be but I do use it for wet hay as well as dry hay. If the hay is not dry enough for storage I wrap the bales. I was told when I bought it that it had a silage kit in it. When I first started using it there was a scraper mounted on one of the rollers. It was meant to scrape off material that will stick to the roller because of the grass juice. I am sure this scraper must be part of the silage kit but I had to remove it because it would either scrape too hard on the roller or let material build up between it and the roller. Either way it would cause the roller to get so hot that I dared not continue. I m not sure if said silage kit only consists of that scraper or there is something else included.
I always run the baler carefully and watch for hay building up behind the belts and the cross support behind the belts at the front of the baler. The more moist the hay is the more it tends to build up there and I will have to remove these clumps every few bales which is annoying but I can live with that. Still looking for a solution though. Anyone else have a Hesston 5540 or 5580?
