I have to agree with Traditional Farmer, Earl Butz was the man that got farmers hooked on the USDA Farm bill subsidy program. And planting corn fence row to fence row was his mantra, as well as get big or get out. Producing more hasnt really helped farmers, only creates over supply and depressed prices. And these over supplies would dry up very quickly if there was no more government subsidy dollars. And prices would reflect the true cost of production. As for how do farmers feed the world, thats not really the farmers responsibility. The farmers try to supply the market. There is no food shortage in the world, only a shortage of money to pay for food. Exporting food into other countries doesnt do anything towards helping a developing country to become self sufficient in food. Because the imported food products compete with domestic production, and the domestic production without government support like we have seen in western nations, cannot compete with the treasury of a western country. One thing we can all agree on, this system is a mess, and is not sustainable in the long term.
